A Republican lawmaker has just come up with the perfect solution to make sure that these protesters stop acting like entitled liberals. The bill in question would allow authorities to charge protesters with committing “economic terrorism.” Washington state Senator Doug Ericksen is the one that is responsible for coming up with the bill.
“I respect the right to protest, but when it endangers people’s lives and property, it goes too far. Fear, intimidation, and vandalism are not a legitimate form of political expression. Those who employ it must be called to account. We are not just going after the people who commit these acts of terrorism. We are going after the people who fund them. Wealthy donors should not feel safe in disrupting middle-class jobs.”
The proposed bill, which is going to pass through considering that the Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the Presidency, would make protesting a class C felony if they create any sort of “economic disruption” or “jeopardize human life and property.”
It would also mean that people that have been discovered to be in violation of this would face up to five years in prison, or a $10,000 fine, or both. Not only that, but any group that organizes a protest that is considered disruptive would also be charged with “economic terrorism.”
Meh. Not interested. Let’s discuss this for a moment.
First of all, “terrorism” has become the latest in political buzz words. Terrorism is a serious issue the entire world is facing these days. And somehow we are tossing it around like the hip thing to say. Not everything is terrorism, and not everything should be treated as terrorism.
The violent protestors are breaking laws. They most certainly should be charged, and they should be charged with what laws they are currently breaking. We don’t need to add “economic terrorism” to the list of charges. What does that actually mean? Seriously, guys. It’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
As I stated, yes, these people should be charged, and it should be much more than a slap on the wrist and an excuse to get out of exams. Arrests are the liberal martyrdom, we all know that. So no catch and release. If they are burning buildings, intentionally hurting or killing people… hell yes, they need to be charged with the felonies those already are.
But do we really need to write another law? They are already breaking numerous laws. Arrest them and charge them properly. We don’t need to make yet another redundant law. We have far too many of them as is. Enforce what is currently on the books, arrest them, and charge them with felonies if one was committed. But let’s leave the terrorism charge for terrorists and stop using it as a hip political buzz word, thus minimizing actual terrorist acts. These are felonies. They need to be treated as such.
