The United Arab Emirates arranged a secret meeting in January between Blackwater founder Erik Prince and a Russian close to President Vladimir Putin as part of an apparent effort to establish a back-channel line of communication between Moscow and President-elect Donald Trump, according to U.S., European and Arab officials.

The meeting took place around Jan. 11 — nine days before Trump’s inauguration — in the Seychelles islands in the Indian Ocean, officials said. Though the full agenda remains unclear, the UAE agreed to broker the meeting in part to explore whether Russia could be persuaded to curtail its relationship with Iran, including in Syria, a Trump administration objective that would be likely to require major concessions to Moscow on U.S. sanctions.

Though Prince had no formal role with the Trump campaign or transition team, he presented himself as an unofficial envoy for Trump to high-ranking Emiratis involved in setting up his meeting with the Putin confidant, according to the officials, who did not identify the Russian.

So… they don’t know anything about what it was about or really even who all was involved. And there is still no real Trump connection.

  1. Can you explain to me why the Dems are so afraid of talking to Russia? I think an amiable relationship would more beneficial than a tense Cold War we grew up with.

    • Ya know, I have seriously been asking the same thing. My mother is a liberal Democrat, so I asked her… she doesn’t get it, either. We’ve been at post 9/11 war for so long that people fighting in it don’t even remember that day. If we can find some way to cool the fires between us and another country so we can avoid a war – which would be horrific if it was with Russia – than I am all for it! I’d love to have a generation of our young men and women make it through life with all the limbs they were born with, and make it to old age!

    • War and Rationing.

Cold Wars are determined by the world’s reserve currency status and failure to directly challenge that status holder. Cold Wars also requires buffer zones to be acknowledged and recognized to develop.

These dynamics are absent here… Alliance shifts are necessary, but they don’t seem forthcoming.
