The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, one of the country’s leading gun control groups, said they gave a presentation to the team behind the primetime show starring Kiefer Sutherland.

“Our president Dan Gross presented to members of their team a while back before the season began about representing gun violence on screen and spent time educating them on the issue,” Brendan Kelly, a Brady Campaign spokesman, told the Washington Free Beacon. “It was part of that larger effort I alluded to in [a recent email to Brady supporters] to work with content producers and creators to highlight the issue of gun violence in America and the sensible solutions at our disposal.”

Designated Survivor airs Wednesdays at 10 P.M. EST and focuses on Sutherland’s character Tom Kirkland who becomes president after most of the federal government is killed in a terrorist attack. The April 5 episode of the series, titled “One Hundred Days,” focused on Sutherland’s character laying out the agenda for his struggling administration. Though the episode begins with Sutherland instructing his staff to avoid hot button issues, his wife makes comments in support of gun control that create a media firestorm.

Shortly afterwards, Sutherland is confronted at a town hall by a woman whose daughter was shot to death by her ex-boyfriend. After calling gun control “one of the most divisive, hot-button topics in our nation,” Sutherland lays out his views.

“I believe that the American people have every right to buy and own guns by virtue of the Second Amendment,” Sutherland’s character said. “I would also like to take a moment to quash the myth that somehow gun control is equal to the Federal Government coming into your home and taking your weapons away. Nobody is advocating for that. We need to be doing everything we can to stop guns from falling into the hands of prior felons, people dealing with serious mental-health issues, people on terrorist watch lists. I mean, come on. We need to be using common sense. It’s as simple as that.”

The Brady Campaign said they were happy with how the series portrayed the issue of gun control.

First off… there will be spoilers.

This is unfortunate. I really like this show and was hoping they wouldn’t go this route. Either way, let’s discuss why this is a ridiculous episode for this show.

If you haven’t seen it, Designated Survivor is basically about a terrorist attack that wiped out 98% of our government, leaving a low level dude to become president. His administration has been plagued by assassination attempts, some secret group trying to take over the government (and the plot line to this, so far, stinks hard of the Manchurian Candidate), leaks, everyone around the new president being completely shady AF, and a brand new catastrophe every week. Truth be told, the show is extremely stressful to watch, but I actually have enjoyed it to date, although I watch it via Hulu and am several weeks behind.

Now, apparently, the latest episode goes into gun control.

Pardon me a moment. But the entire government was just blown up. This guy’s cabinet hasn’t been completed yet. There is almost no Senate or Congress. The brand new VP just got killed by his creepy assed wife after he ordered them to shoot to kill the guy who shot the president and some other shady things. They are dealing with leakers and possible traitors right there in the White House…

If this was going on in real life, gun control wouldn’t even be an issue on the radar, much less discussed. There would be so many other issues of much higher importance that I don’t think 99.9% of the country or the government would be paying much mind to gun control issues. And if it was the first thing on the list for someone in government, I’m pretty sure we’d just hand them some coloring books and tell them to shut up while the adults put the country back together.

So why on Earth did they even find it necessary to put this topic in there?! I’m sure the leftists are rejoicing, as you saw from the gun control group they consulted. Everyone else is sitting there thinking like me… I’m sorry, isn’t there something else you need to be focusing your attention on? This is absurd!

I understand they have a leftist agenda to push, and they have been doing it the entire show. But if they want the show to hang around, maybe attempting some semblance of how something like this would play out would be best. And things like social issues and hot button topics are not going to reign supreme if this was real life.
