Top Execs to Review All Russia Stories After Very Fake News Retraction

BuzzFeed’s Deputy News Director Jon Passantino tweeted a screenshot of a leaked internal memo from Barbieri to CNN staff instructing them that all future Russia-related stories must be cleared by him or the VP of Premium Content Video, Jason Farkas. The email, which was sent at 11:21 AM on Saturday, reads, “No one should publish any content involving Russia without coming to me and Jason [Farkas].” The memo continues, “This applied to social, video, editorial, and MoneyStream. No exceptions. I will lay out a workflow Monday.”

CNN Found Guilty In Lawsuit, $30M Penalty Advances For Knowingly Publishing Fake News Hit Job

Federal Judge Orinda Evans in Atlanta overruled CNN’s claim that the lawsuit against them was a SLAPP case.

“By knowingly comparing a mortality rate for Dr. Black based only on open-heart surgeries to a mortality rate based on both open-heart and closed-heart surgeries, the CNN Defendants knowingly and artificially inflated Dr. Black’s mortality rate vis-à-vis the STS national average,” reads the complaint. “A true and fair comparison would require an apples-to-apples comparison of Dr. Black’s mortality rate for both open- and closed-heart surgeries to the STS national average.”
Further, the CNN report only includes a raw death number. But the STS keeps a “risk-adjusted” figure which takes into account the health of a patient when they enter. Hospitals that treat higher risk patients, have higher mortality rates. This is part because of the condition itself and that it’s going more expensive and more complex to treat them.

Carbone also claims the network purposely ignored information that would make the story two-sided, or favorable, in order to add more glitz to the piece. The lawsuit complains that Carbone wasn’t given an adequate chance to respond. The camera shows the reporter ambushing Carbone outside his house and blankly asking for the death rate, a statistic that the hospital typically does not publish. Carbone was unprepared to comment and therefore declined. That was his only chance to defend himself. The lawsuit reads:

“The CNN Defendants did not intend to obtain information for their story from Mr. Carbone when [reporter Elizabeth Cohen] and a CNN camera crew ambushed him and his wife at their home. Rather, the CNN Defendants intended to obtain footage for their story that would falsely portray Mr. Carbone and, by implication, St. Mary’s and Dr. Black, as unwilling to provide information about the Program.”

The result was devastating to the hospital. The hospital closed the pediatric heart surgery program, claiming that “inaccurate media reports” would make it difficult to “build sustainable volume.” Carbone resigned in August and claimed he has been unable to find work in hospital administration.

CNN still claims innocence. CNN’s legal team e-mailed St. Mary’s lawyer stating, “Arguing that we should use a set of figures more favorable to your client may be a basis for criticism, which CNN has been transparent about, but it does not render CNN’s reporting false nor in any way irresponsible or malicious.”

CNN Runs Story Imagining Trump & Entire Cabinet Are Assassinated & It’s Not Going Over Well

“A rather bizarre commentary…”

I’d be willing to give this some benefit of the doubt. Yeah, it was a bizarre commentary, as it says above, and it is really bizarre to do a story like this the night before the inauguration. Buuuuuut…..

As someone who watches the show Designated Survivor, I can kind of understand why they ran with this.

  1. So many people are over the top upset about this election. We live in a world where people burn down their town when they don’t get what they want. People are doing everything they can think of to keep Trump out of office, and they are already planning attempts at impeachment without even giving him a chance. Is it hard to imagine that one of these nutbags could get extra nutbaggy? There are going to be a lot of protesters there tomorrow. 99.9% of them are nutbags.
  2. If you never saw the actual show, the basic idea is… there is a terrorist attack on the Capitol Building that kills everyone inside (with the exception of one guy, which is revealed later in the season, and a woman who was designated without anyone knowing, which is weird, because she was high enough in the food chain that she should have been the president in this case). The designated survivor is a low level cabinet member that no one knows and who actually got fired that morning (but was still the designated survivor). Because literally everyone is believed dead, he’s sworn in as the president. The show is a hit. And I have no doubt that people are curious about the designated survivor idea because of this show.
  3. This story also posses a reminder that if someone does get stupid, Obama won’t stay in the White House. Pence would become president. And if Pence were to die, it would most likely go to Paul Ryan.
  4. A better addition to this story would probably have been the immense amount of security that will be there. How likely is it that an Obama minion would end up in the White House? Jill Stein had better odds of winning the presidency than this line of thinking has at becoming a reality.

So yeah, on the surface, it was a weird story. But I can kind of see the thought behind it. Although it certainly could have been done a lot better, maybe without sounding so wishful thinking like.
